How instructors join

Every instructor completes identity verification through Stripe Identity and a background check through Checkr before they can be booked. Instructors must have at least one year of experience in each subject they teach, and confirm this in the Instructor Participation Agreement. They are responsible for maintaining any licenses or certifications their field requires. We do not independently verify years of experience, degrees, memberships, or credentials.

What background checks cover

Checkr runs a Social Security number trace, a national criminal database search, a nationwide sex offender registry search, and a global watchlist search, using identity information verified through Stripe Identity. Checks are point-in-time and are not exhaustive; they do not cover every jurisdiction or offense type, do not detect conduct that occurred before a record was created, and do not detect conduct that occurs after the search is completed. We do not continuously monitor instructors between screenings.

Lessons with children

An adult over 18 must be present at any lesson involving a student under 18, and must stay in the room where the lesson takes place, or within direct sight of it if the lesson is outdoors, at a pool, in an open area, or at a public location. For an online lesson, the adult stays in the room with the student. Being elsewhere in the home does not meet this requirement. The adult who books the lesson is responsible for making sure someone is there. Instructors are required to confirm an adult is present before starting and to end the lesson if no one is.

Lesson types

You choose the lesson type when you book: at your address, at a location the instructor posts on the platform (their studio or home, or a public meeting spot like a park or library), or online. When a lesson happens somewhere other than your own home, you decide whether the location works for you before you book. The adult-present rule applies to every lesson type, including online lessons, where the adult stays in the room with the student.

Physical contact during lessons

Some subjects involve contact as a normal part of teaching, such as a piano teacher moving a student's hand into position, a swim instructor supporting a student in water, or a dance instructor adjusting posture. Where contact is part of the instruction, it must be limited to what teaching actually requires, must be brief and openly done, and must stop immediately if the student is uncomfortable. For a lesson involving a minor, the adult present can object to any contact and require a non-contact alternative. Contact that is romantic, sexual, or unrelated to teaching is prohibited and grounds for immediate removal from the platform.

Communications

Keep lesson messages on the platform. Our systems monitor platform communications and help detect attempts to move conversations or payments elsewhere, which protects everyone's records and our ability to help if something goes wrong. Instructors are prohibited from contacting a minor outside the platform, on social media, or anywhere else.

Booking and payments

Accounts belong to adults. All payments run through the platform. Never pay an instructor outside it, and let us know if anyone asks you to.

When we remove an instructor

When we remove an instructor from the platform, they cannot rejoin under a new account.

Reporting

You can end a lesson at any time, for any reason. If something feels wrong while a lesson is happening, end it and tell us. If anything feels off, before, during, or after a lesson, contact support@instainstru.com right away. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services first. We review every report, we act on them, and we cooperate with law enforcement where appropriate.

What we can and cannot promise

Screening reduces risk; no screening can guarantee any person. Instructors are independent providers, and you choose who teaches in your home. Our commitment is to give you real information, real controls, and a team that responds when you need it.
